Karl Baxter - Masterclass Workshop

Texturing and Colouring Sheet Glass within One kiln firing.

Two Day Workshop - Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th April 2024

Time: 9am-4pm Sat & Sun

Venue: 153 Taukoro Road, MORRINSVILLE.

Maximum 6 students (Minimum 4 students for the course to run)

Cost: $600 per student with intermediate Glass experience or higher.

Karl has generously offered to pass on all his years of glass artwork knowledge during the 2-day Masterclass workshop. Karl will introduce students to various aspects of texturing and colouring glass techniques developed during his 30 years experience working within the glass industry.

The course is designed to be fun but fast paced to practice and gain a grounding in techniques working with Lustres, Glass Enamel powders, High Temperature resists, Kiln Carving design reliefs and Sandblasting resists.   Emphasis will be placed on the ability to create colour and texture to one or both sides of 6mm & 10mm sheet float glass to maximise use within one kiln firing.  A kiln firing will be held at the end of each day on Saturday and Sunday.

Students will be learning these techniques by completing several glass projects using various kiln forming methods, materials, and colouring applications with Lustres and Enamels.  Kiln carving and sandblasting resists will be discussed on how to create and cut out designs.  Karl will also have pre-set designs available from utilising a Scan and Cut machine for both kiln-carving relief designs and sandblasting resists.  Work stations will be set up for each technique to use throughout the workshop.

Students are encouraged to take notes during the workshop, with time for question sessions allocated for Karl to openly pass on his vast knowledge.  Ideas of airbrushing techniques, installations and outdoor sculpture will also be discussed during lunchtime powerpoint presentations.

All Workshop materials for making glass projects will be provided.

Including Lustre samples to take home to practice and create new work.

Collection or courier of workshop works are to be arranged for the following weekend at students cost.
